Troubleshooting Ford 4630 Tractor Problems
Ford 4630 is known to have transmission problems. The most common scenario involves the sudden jamming of the transmission. The change of gears seems impossible because of the sticking of the transmission on the gear itself.
The best solution to this problem is to inspect the level of hydraulic oil in your transmission. Check if it is filled up or not. In case it is up to the level, there is no problem with it.
The next thing you need to do is check the synchronizer and the clutch. Most of the transmission problems arise from the failure in either of these components.
- Engine Is Hard To Start
No matter what Ford model you have, it will have an issue with its starting. The same is the case with the Ford 4630. There are three categories of starting issues.
In some cases, Ford takes a lot of time to start. Most of the time, starting is very hard. However, there are also situations where the tractor is unable to start.
The failure of the starter prevents the starting of the engine. The starter needs to be overhauled. There can also be a problem with the spark plug and the battery.
You need to check the battery and see if it is charged well with the proper voltage. The battery must be able to hold a charge. Only then will it function well.
For the checking of the spark plug, get your hands on the spark plug tester and use it to get a good spark from the cranking of the engine. If the spark plug doesn’t give a good spark, it needs to be replaced with a new plug.

With time, the injector pump plunger can also wear out. Replace them with the new ones. The air filter needs to be checked for any blocking. Get rid of the fuel tank cap and try running the tractor. In this way, the problem with the fuel system vacuum is solved.
However, experts are not really in favor of this solution because it can contaminate the tank with dirt. Instead of removing the cap, clean it and change it.
- Engine Frequently Stalls
Ford 4630 might stop all of a sudden without any warning. This problem is also caused by the reasons mentioned above. Contaminated fuel and fuel flow issues can cause the engine to stall frequently.
You need to check the fuel for its quality, the fuel tank cap, and the air filter. Perform the inspection on the damaged hoses as well. Sometimes they are leaking fuel.
Another thing you need to check is the broken parts in the engine. See if there is a gas cap in place of a fuel cap. If yes, it will be unable to pressurize the diesel engine.
The engine might have installation faults, such as the over-tightening of a screw. Sometimes, the solenoid is malfunctioning and causes the entire tractor to halt suddenly. This is a complicated issue that should be consulted with a professional.
- Engine Overheating
Ford 4630 overheats pretty often. The coolant level drops and causes overheating. The drop in the coolant level might result from any leak or a loose connection. As a result, the cooling process is not effective. Therefore, check for leaks whenever your engine is overheating.
The fan belt is another component that needs to be checked. The loosening or wearing out of the fan belt prevents the cooling of the engine. If the belt is loose, adjust it. If it has worn out, you will have to replace it. Check the radiator as well. It gets dirty with time.
The most important thing to do is the maintenance of the load and speed. As obvious as it is, the abundance of the load on the tractor overheats the engine
PTO problems are also frequently observed in Ford 4630. Most of the users experience that PTO works fine as soon as it is turned on. However, if a number of hours have passed since the turning on of the PTO, it might start having problems.
In order to deal with this problem, the pressure going to the PTO clutch valve needs to be checked. Another thing that you need to take care of is the hydraulic reservoir and the rear axle.

- Clutch Getting Stuck To Flywheel

You should also try to stomp the brakes. This action might set the clutch loose. If this doesn’t solve your problem, you should get a clutch job.
- Steering Problems

Shuttle is very hard to shift
My 4630 will operate ok for several hours and then just stop as if hit brick wall. Sometimes can change range shift and it will carry on but other times have to leave until next day to get it going. Have changed hydraulic/trans filter and it had plenty of oil. Any ideas please
Drain the fuel, disconnect the fuel line from the bottom of the tank and unscrew the fitting from the bottom of the tank and remove it completely. The screen strainer/filter on top of the fitting will build up with a tar like material that restricts fuel flow. This screen strainer is often negelcted as a maintainence item an will become partially clogged and get worse with use. I removed and cleaned the strainer on my 4630 and it solved the problem that you described. While not a guaranteed fix for your tractor inspecting and cleaning this screen should be added to routine maintaince.
My 1997 4630 does nothing when the switch is turned. New battery worked for 2 days, then it sat for 10 days and nothing. I put charger on and it shows battery is fully charged. 12.7 volts on volt meter. Also the lights are not coming on. I get continuity to the starter and solenoid from the battery. I struggle to get to the starter switch. Have taken all the bolts and screws out I can find and still can’t move the cover but a couple inches without taking the steering wheel off and haven’t tried that. YET. Any clues would be appreciated.

my 4630 tractor will go in gear and after a very short time it stops pulling so I change gears and it will pull for a very short time I have changed the one of the hydraulic filters and the fluid is full. do you have any ideas has to what may be causing this problem? thank you.
