So you stand there at the nursery door holding a picture from their catalog of a hydrangea, which the label say will grow in zone seven. Your map indicate that yes indeed, you are in zone seven. Sounds as if the two of you will get along.
But the zone on the tag was probably zone seven a, whereas the one where you garden (your front yard) is zone seven b. The difference: five degrees. It is enough to kill a shrub or make it thrive. A little thing, but it makes all the differance to you (and your wallet), for better or worse.
How to Use Plant Zone Maps Correctly
And that’s where some people go off the rails with the chart: They see winter-hardy ratings only, when what the plant hardiness zone chart actualy represents is a map of winter survival. Not an expectation of frost-free days or even summer heat. What the chart measure is the average extreme minimum temperature each year.
So here we have a visual explanation of the zones stacked up in bands. Each full zone are split in half. This is a critical detail because, if you look at map above, a plant listed as being zone six can survive the cold in six b (above) but can be killed by more severe freeze of six a. That’s where most gardeners goes wrong, too. Ignoring the letter altogether and thinking of zone six as one zone. No. The chart explain why there are two halves to each full zone. Those halves represent different temperature range that determine whether your perennials will return in spring.
The map has changed, and will continue to do so. The 2023 update reflect newly calculated climate normals, which means many spots is warmer and have shifted to match. So if you’re working from a map from a decade back, you’re doing so with out-of-date data. Indeed, many counties has been bumped upward a half-zone, meaning certain varieties that were too risky before may be possible now.
But don’t get overconfident. Your backyard have oddities all its own. It’s likely to be cooler different than the street thermometer says. A north-facing wall, a heavy tree canopy overhead, or a dip in the ground can each create a microclimate that’s several degrees cooler. On each perennial plant tag, there will be a zone indication, the coldest one it’ll tolerate. Don’t think you can trick a zone-five plant into zone four where it will freeze to death. Obey that number.
Not that they will match your actual conditions, here’s the real trick: Match the plant to your actual conditions. Examine the extreme minimum temperature ranges where you live. If you’re on the warm edge of your zone, you might get away with a slightly tender plant. Otherwise, go easy if you’re on the cold edge. Windbreaks help. So does mulch.
But all told, what trumps everything? Buy the right plant for the right half-zone. It saves you the heartbreak of seeing your investment turn to brown mush when first hard freeze arrives. You should of bought the right one.
IT’S A deal with your weather: “You’re negotiating with Mother Nature,” they say. “It’s not the climate you can control; it’s the information.” The map is the beginning, not the end of the process. Fine-tune your decisions according to what works where you live. Then read that letter code on each plant label and adapt again for your personal microclimate. Think of the zone as the floor, not the ceiling.
That way, your hydrangea will survive the winter. It will be there waiting for you next spring, bursting open just like the photo said it would.
