When it comes to the survival of a tree, the stem is probably the most important part. It not only nourishes it by providing a channel to deliver the much-needed nutrients to the branches and leaves, but it also provides the support for upholding the tree upright.
However, sometimes people complain that the tree splitting down the middle is making them nervous, as they might not be cured. This article is focused on providing solutions to avoid such an issue in the first place.
Dealing With A Tree Splitting Down the Middle
1. Cracked Trees and their Types
Usually, it is best practice to assess the situation before deciding to chop it down completely, as it might not be a significant crack and still be saved. The first thing to observe is the crack on the stem of the tree. Significant cracks can be observed easily but the small fissures that may have appeared may be difficult to observe. Yet they too can make the structure of the tree weakened and can be a cause of further damage.
There are multiple types of cracks,
- Full Split Trunk
- Frost Cracks
- Partial side crack
2. Bracing the Tree
The first thing to do in the case of a cracked tree is to observe the surface of the tree and see if there is decay or pest infestation that might have appeared on it. If this is the case then it must be treated before moving on to join the two halves together. As once joined, the infection might become a headache. In case there is no decay, you can start by mechanically pulling the tree together using details. Drill machines are used to drill holes in the stem of the cracked tree. These holes are subject to the size and shape of the tree, as wrong drilling will make it more vulnerable.
After the holes have been made, pass the rods through the stem and tighten them on either side with nuts. This will provide the support, which the wood fibers were providing. Care must be taken that support is needed in the starting phase, hence it is recommended to use ropes to hold the tree trunk in place.
3. The Tree doctors
Like humans and animals, trees have doctors and surgeons called “Arborists”. These are responsible for treating the diseases and any such issues that are not limited to cracked trees. A professional arborist is recommended, as they are aware of the damage that might have been caused and their probable solutions. They may even recommend using other techniques and if need be the total removal of the tree itself.
4. Applying Coating
Sometimes the crack might not be significant and thus the statement tree splitting down the middle hardly seems alarming. The best remedy is to cut away the extra weight that might speed up the cracking process. The next step is to get some tree pruning sealer and apply it to the damaged trunk. This thick layer is likely to provide the support and protection that is needed to keep the tree from dying away. In some cases, people have added a wax-like resin called “Shellac” to the surface to heal the cracked areas.
5. Side Cracks
In some cases, it is observed that the crack has appeared on the side of the tree, meaning that a side portion has been affected and is falling away. This is not a serious issue as cutting down the affected part makes the tree look bare, but it will truly save it from causing decay. Next is to remove the added weight by cutting off the branches. Being a highly recommended practice, it will not damage the tree as it will soon heal itself and grow new branches.
6. Saying Goodbye
Although it may seem hard but sometimes saying goodbye and cutting the tree down is the best option. This is likely to happen when a tree is cracked right in the middle with pest infestation and decay in the center of the crack. It is recommended to uproot trees and plant new ones instead. A cracked tree can be a public hazard, especially in windy areas where the winds can cause the crack to speed up and may end up injuring a passerby or causing damage to your or someone else’s property.
