IT’S A yellow-leaf tomato; you guess it’s hungry for nitrogen, grab the N-rich fertilizer and go for it. Apply, then wait a week…and find the issue has climbed higher on the stem. Sound familiar?
Why is it we gardeners assume when things get discolored they’re just on a hunger strike? It’s a mistake to assume that plants gives us such clear signals about what nutrients are missing… And when. Instead they express their distress through subtle changes in texture and color. The trick is to read the pattern of what is happening to them rather then assuming why.
How to Read Your Plant’s Leaves
That’s where most of us as gardeners fail: We don’t diagnose. Most of us simply assume we lack nitrogen because that is what everyone says. However, yellow leaves are not always caused by a nitrogen deficiency. They can signals many different things, depending on their pattern and whether the veins shows through. Above, I have broken it down further by looking at how damage appears instead of looking at the underlying chemistry. You’ll save yourself the expense of amending without addressing cause, and that’s the point.
First: What age leaves is affected? Because plants tend to prioritize keeping newer growth (and especially growing tips) alive and moving nutrients around, older lower leaves turning pale can signal mobile nutrient problems. But yellowing between veins with green veins suggest an iron- or maybe a magnesium-deficiency, and how this manifests will depend on leaf age. Distress in the youngest flush indicates that the nutrient is not mobile; in other words, the plant could of not move it from its older leaves into newer ones. That’s important, because it says whether cause lies in recent uptake, or perhaps in a longer-term depletion of stored reserves.
The edges of leaves matter. Brown, crispy leaf margins on older foliage are a clear sign of potassium deficiency, or sometimes just high fertility with too much salt build-up from overfertilizing. This marginal burn pattern stands out well on chart, and it’s easy to confuse with drought stress (again, particularly if soil feels dry). Typically there would be some wilting first with water stress, though; not the kind of necrotic browning that happen as permanent damage. If leaves are still firm but the margin is burned, revisit your fertilizer history; sometimes high levels of nitrogen can prevents potassium uptake, leading to deficiency despite potassium being available on the soil.
Speed also counts. On tomatoes, tip burn can shows up fast when stressed. Other problems don’t show until weeks later, though some will even print right onto leaves in just days. With spinach, a uniform pale fading might fall well short of matching actual soil problem; lagging by almost three weeks. This lag is why testing your soil to prevent problems is much more helpful than reacting to symptoms. By the time you notice those symptoms, the plant has likely been struggling for a while.
A word about nutrient deficiency: Always inspect underside of leaf, as both fungal problems and mites can perfectly mimic these deficiencies. If you fertilize a pest issue, you’ll just invite in more of the invaders. Before changing your soil chemistry, a hasty swipe with a white paper towel will show you who’s hiding there first. Pest damage looks like mottled chlorosis (stippling).
Finally, be patient. Don’t soak the plant with doses of correction when you think you’ve found your pattern, shocking the root system with an abrupt change in soil chemistry can cause more issues than before. First tend to the pH (nutrients aren’t available beyond their optimum range), then apply small doses gently and wait for confirmation. If you’re on track, the plant will let you know, and reading its record in the leaf closely will help you stop guessing.
