How to Fix Peppers That Are Not Growing Well
The most critical nutrients is nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Nutrient deficiencies shows up rapidly and are not localized. Does the plant appear small? Are its older leaves pale yellow-green? It probably needs nitrogen. Sandy soils lose nutrients such as these when they wash away in irrigation or rain water. Apply fish emulsion or blood meal (check soil’s pH first).
Phosphorus deficiency is more distinctive: The underside of leaves and stems may be reddish-purple or purplish, especially apparent during cool weather, when the soil is below 60 degrees F. In cold weather, phosphorus is locked up and unavailable to plant, even if it is present in the soil.
If you see any scorch marks on the edge of older leaves: Those are potassium issues. This is a needed element for good fruit quality, and without it your peppers will be smaller then they should of be (and less sweet). Too much water (and especially sandy soils) leach potassium from root zone.
Secondary nutrients include calcium and magnesium, which can also shows symptoms more characteristic of diseases. A classic indicator of calcium deficiency is what’s known as blossom end rot, where there’s a dark spot at the bottom of each fruit. Generally, the issue isn’t a lack of available calcium in the soil. Instead, the cause is inconsistent watering or high amounts of salts in the soil which prevent plants from taking it up.
If older leaves have yellowing between green veins, that may indicate magnesium deficiency, with interveinal chlorosis being the term used for this type of symptom. Some issues, like micronutrients, can be complicated: Plants require small quantities but stop growing without them.
Yellow leaves between the green veins on young foliage indicate an iron deficiency. This is nearly always due to a pH issue. When the soil pH exceeds 6.8, iron is unavailable to the plant. First adjust the pH downward (then apply chelated iron if necessary).
A lack of boron results in pollen troubles and problems with cell division; symptoms includes distorted shoots and cracked fruit. Be careful with boron. The margin between too little and too much is narrow. With it you want just enough, not more than that.
Manganese and zinc deficiency also show up as yellowing between the veins. Zinc affects the youngest growth, causing small, bunched-up leaves, while manganese affect the middle parts of the plant.
No matter what amendments are added, stressed roots can’t pick up nutrients; therefore a root problem is a big issue. Sparse, brown roots without tiny root hairs don’t take up nutrients. If your roots fail it might be due to compacted soil, too much moisture, or an extreme pH level.
First: Before adding any amendments, test your soil’s pH. Peppers do best in a slightly acidic range of 6.2 to 6.8, which makes most nutrients accessible to the plants. To do this, gather soil samples from root zone, then have them tested at a lab. Guessing about deficiencies isn’t good; knowing the exact missing element helps.
Typically, solving the root issue… Like water consistency or pH balance, is the answer and doesn’t involve buying costly sprays. A healthy root means a healthy fruit.
