You stop skimming it for easy-to-see enemies and start seeing the plants up close.

When we learn to recognize these creatures, we transform our gardens from battlegrounds to balanced ecosystems. It’s no longer each bug for him- or herself; instead, we begin to see the complex web of life on which good garden plant depend. The next time you encounter a caterpillar, spend a few seconds looking at it (and what it’s eating) before taking action.
