Use the estimate as a ceiling: If the top layer is dry but the lower mix is still heavy and cool, wait. Most indoor watering problems come from repeating a calendar amount without checking the root zone.
Water differently by pot: Terracotta, bark, and small pots can need earlier checks, while glazed pots, cachepots, and winter rooms often need less water and longer dry-down time.
Getting the water right is one of those small daily decision that quietly shapes how well your houseplants grow. Curling, crisped leaves are signs of too little water. Roots sitting in soggy soil won’t dry out and will cause rot, which is never good. Knowing when the soil dries is key; not necessarily according to any set schedule.

How to Water Houseplants Correctly

Many people fall into trap of “watering weekly no matter what.” This assumes that plants only need water once a week. However, some things is fine going longer, like every 12 or 14 days instead of the six they’d require during high summer when heat is on. Another big problem is thinking all pots are created equal. A plant growing in a glazed pot on a shady shelf may be drying out faster than its identical twin in a terracotta one beside a heating vent. It would of been easier to check first.
