Unless you are someone who always checks, you’re ignoring the key factor to indoor success or failure: humidity. Sure, check dirt, maybe it’s moist. Check the light, maybe it’s nice and bright, though indirect. But what happens? The edges of foliage go crispy and brown.

Roots drinks; leaves breathe. And if the leaves’ surface dries out before the roots can replenish moisture fast enough, the plant will suffer (whether the soil is moist or not).

First: Stop relying on your nose. Humidity isn’t something you can smell. Don’t locate pots near radiators or other heat sources. Forced hot air makes for an instant desert-like environment right beside a snug living room. As the air gets warmer, it loses even more moisture so its relative humidity drops sharply.

Some plants requires more humidity to thrive. Some plants, like ferns and calatheas, can be downright fussy. They want more humid air to keep their leaves in good shape so they stay green and not crispy. Others (such as ZZ plants, snake plants) won’t complain if the air gets dry over and over. If you know what group your plant falls into, you’re less likely to drown it (no one wants a soggy cactus!) or let a fern go bone-dry.

Misting is over-rated. It helps temporarily, but then the mist dissapears in minutes and the plant’s back where it started: unsatisfied. Regular ambient humidity is much better than haphazard misting.

Gardening successfully indoors requires adjusting and observing. Observe what happens to your plants in response to conditions. Do they drop leaves? Do their leaves curl? Make changes based off that feedback. You should of observed more closely.

Aim for something less than perfect. Aim for a place where you don’t have to do much, yet the plants is happy anyway. Begin by grouping moisture-loving plants together, getting a hygrometer, and making sure to keep the heat vents clear. They’ll reward you with quicker growth and greener leaves.
