How to Check Soil Moisture

How does it work? Think of it as a kind of scale that maps a spectrum where the middle ground is typicaly best. A reading closer to one or two show those plants are in drought-mode; their cells are collapsing. And a reading higher than seven? That would be too wet, when even roots can’t breathe oxygen. No oxygen leads to root rot, and root rot goes fast.

Knowing what makes that sweet spot gives you the ability to water according to need, not some set schedule. Why won’t one schedule work for all? Each plant have its own tolerance level for wet (or dry). Cacti and succulents, which evolved to hold water, does well when they’re almost dry before watering again. Leave such creatures be for weeks; they’ll usually be OK.

Plants that hail from tropical regions, where moisture is constant, want things moister and will realy let you know about it if the soil dries out at all: Peace lilies or any of the genus Calathea would be examples here. Interpreting the numbers is important, but so is using the meter properly. Don’t just dip it in the moist soil surface; push it deeply into the root zone. Because the uppermost inch or so of soil surface will be dry first, a fast poke won’t yield an accurrate test. Let it stabilize (typically within about one minute) and then decide what action to take. That pause avoids hasty waterings that end up requiring even more work down the road.

Rinse off the metal probes between uses too, to prevent mineral build-up from affecting your next reading. A dirty probe isn’t telling you the truth.

Most of us are reactive: we let plants show us they need something before we do anything about it. We see a brown or yellow leaf, assume there was to little water, then watch helplessly as the plant gets damaged inside, long after the leaf turned color. With early testing, you can get ahead of such outward signs of distress; and catch that small decrease in moisture level and correct it before any harm appears.

That’s what makes a confident gardener from a beginner: a move from being reactive to becoming proactive. The difference is that you no longer fret over “Did I forget to water,” but realy know when to expect to have to again. This hobby’s about consistency, not intensity: If you test your plants on a regular day of the week at roughly the same time each week, you create a rhythm that will protect you from either extreme.

You learn which pots dry out quickly (based off their contents, material, and location) and know what season will slow or speed up the process. The summer heat speeds things along; the winter dormancy slows them way down. Adapt accordingly and keep everything balanced. Sometimes doing nothing (i.e., knowing when NOT to pour) is every bit as critical than knowing when to pour. Restraint saves more plants than enthusiasm could of.
