So you planted some seeds, and then waited…and waited…and nothing happened. What’s up with that? It is frustratingly.
Most often it’s not because you’re doing anything wrong as a gardener; it’s because you don’t know what seed need, specifically. Seeds are living things, and they each has their own needs, which trigger them into life. They want darkness, or light, cold, warm…Some even rot in the dark. This chart categorizes flowers based off how fast they take off, which will help you gauge if what you’ve got happening is typical.
Why Your Seeds Will Not Grow
Some seeds require little more than a place to sprout (and some water). With fast sprouters, your reward for doing the work come quickly: Sunflower seeds, marigold seeds, zinnia seeds, for instance, sprout within a matter of days. They’re forgiving; they make great first-timer seeds, too. Plant them and they pop up. That’s instant feedback. No complicated ritual required with those seed.
Make sure they stay warm and moist. And look at the chart: Some of these seeds will sprout even if you cover them deeply, while others wants light on top and just barely covered. If you don’t cover them, the seeds won’t dry out, but they also don’t use much stored energy to push their way up through the ground.
There is techniques required of slow- and medium-growers, too. Most important: light. Some seeds are very small (snapdragons, impatiens, petunias) and has little reserve to punch up through a heavy layer of soil. To start growing, they require light; burying them will put them into dormancy.
Surface sow these seeds, as you would with any variety that needs light, press them gently into the soil surface, but do not cover them. Yes, many do it anyway because it seems to retain moisture (but also covers the light signal). For surface-sown seeds like these, which benefit from a bit of humidity to stay somewhat moist at the surface, use a humidity dome, as the chart says.
Other flowers (like phlox, delphiniums) has another requirement: a period of cold, moist darkness called cold stratification. This means waiting out winter in nature, but you fake it in your seed tray by refrigerating the seeds for a couple of weeks before sowing them. It’s easy to do, and the chart makes it clear which ones requires the extra step… Or else you get dead soil…and it isn’t your fault.

You chill the ones who need it, warm up the quickies and pull out the light lovers. Suddenly, starting seeds becomes a science you can count on. No more guesses; just know what comes next.
