Citizens of Citrus: You thought there were just some easy-to-distinguish, clearly defined types of citrus? Nope; most common ones we eat are actualy mixes of three very old ancestors. Moddern-day genomics clarifies their relationships and their DNA. This makes more sense when you think about them genetically, as shown in the chart above.
In this view, common names is merely labels stuck onto a map of a group of hybrids. The citrus genus (*Citrus*) is part of the rue family. True ancestral groups is few. The remainder are all intricate hybrids, propagated by cloning for hundreds of years.
The True History of Citrus Fruits
As the infographic shows, there are three main parental lines: citron, pomelo and mandarin. Together they makes up a genetic triangle. Every lime, grapefruit, or sweet orange can be traced back to them. Commonly misidentified, the grapefruit itself isn’t a single species; it’s a hybrid of a sweet orange and a pomelo.
Citrus’ story is one that matches human trade. Long before the ocean-crossing Atlantic voyage, citron traveled west on Greek and Persian trade routes. Sweet oranges found their way into the New World on Portuguese merchant ships; bitter orange follow, as did all manner of Arabic farming throughout the Mediterranean.
Genetic blending had begun by 1753, when Linneaus gave official names to plants. While the genetics kept evolving, the names became set in stone. So it’s no wonder that science sometimes seem at odds with what we see in the orchard. This is the timeline of the chart, which reflects how domestication happened along trade routes, not necessarily from a common origin.
Know your chromosomes. Most citrus have eighteen chromosomes as their base diploid count; which is impressive considering how different in flavor and form they can absorbs. That’s also why so many kinds of citrus makes good grafts: They’re genetically set up to be compatible.
A classic rootstock would be the bitter orange, which also has that genetic foundation but adds vigor and disease resistance. Knowing this compatibility (as opposed to learning all those Latin names) is important whether you’re buying a tree or growing one yourself. It’s a compatible genetic base; you’ve got that going for you.
That hybrid reality is backed up by production data. Sweet oranges dominates global harvests, followed by mandarins and lemons. Those aren’t wild species growing in the wild. They’re human inventions, honed for hundreds of years to produce maximum acid, or maximum sweetness, or a good balance of both.
As you can see from the chart above, cultivar diversity follows closely with fruit production: because plant breeders repeatedly selected most desirable examples, there are thousands of different orange cultivars out there. In contrast, wild papedas has remained niche items. While they do give flavor and aroma (think key limes), they never becomes dominant on the market.
For example: Fruit color is never the sole basis off field identification. Know also how to interpret the peel, and even more tellingly, the leaf. Little pulp plus thick albedo equals citron. Biggest fruit and thickest rind of all goes to pomelo. Ancestors of today’s easy peels were mandarins.
The graphic organizes these characteristics so you can tell them apart. This helps you spot the hybrid complexes that confuse you when you are identifying your own trees, reading a nursery tag, or looking at a catalog page of germplasm. So you don’t think something labeled as such really is.
In other words, taxonomy is ultimately humbling, especially when it comes to citrus. We forced an unruly evolution into a neat system. The names help sell it, but hide a more complex tale of adaptation and mixing. Use the binomials, yes, for your plants, but do your grafting and breeding knowing that there’s hybrid history involved.
