A hanging basket grows in three directions. Leave enough rim and soil room for plants to expand, for water to soak in, and for air to move through the crown.

Most beginner’s mistakes occur with spacing. The mentality of planting involves putting dots on a map, but a plant is a sphere and expands outward. Choosing a high growth setting will increase the distance recommended between your trailing spillers and upright fillers. This gives each plant plenty of side space to establish its root ball without fighting for resources.
Following these tips may make you feel like you left too many empty spaces. Fight that temptation. Plants live in 3 dimensions, and what appears sparse at planting time will soon be a lush, full display in just a few weeks. Overcrowding is the silent killer in hanging baskets because it creates a local environment of stagnant humidity around the crown.
Sun exposure acts as a multiplier for your watering efforts. For instance, a three-day gap between soaking sessions in bright shade works for a basket. The same basket in hot exposed sun (and I mean hot) would probably be one or two times per day during an August heat wave. There is an additional layer: water demand. A successful grower knows the importance of matching plants with similar thirst levels. Succulent drought-tolerant plants and high-demand bloomers won’t work well together, a maintenance nightmare. By selecting your water demand profile, the calculator will adjust the volume recommendations accordingly (implicitly flagging these mismatches). If you’re mixing it up, make sure they’re on the same page. A mix that needs the same amount of moisture is much easier to maintain than one where some parts are drowning while others are bone dry.
That’s half the story; now add the liner type. Heavy-duty plastic bowls hold moisture longer than coconut coir liners, which are popular and more breathable.
