💡 Tip: Moisture Matters. Compost weight varies 30–50% depending on moisture content. Freshly screened or rain-soaked compost can weigh up to 1,400 lbs per cubic yard, while dry compost may only hit 600–800 lbs. If youre hauling in a truck, check the payload rating and assume the heavier end to be safe.
💡 Tip: Settling & Compaction. Compost settles about 10–15% after application and watering. If youre filling a raised bed, add 10–15% extra volume to account for this. For topdressing lawns, a thinner 0.25–0.5 inch layer is enough — no need to bury the grass.

Those products work for organic and regular farms as well as for home gardens. Main attention is given to creation of healthy soil for a healthy community.

Even so once there was serious trouble. The Compost from the site of Chittenden Solid Waste District in Williston caused harm or death of some broadleaf garden plants, like tomatoes. That cost the district at least 800 000 dollars.

The cause was a chemical called aminopyralid. It comes from products of Dow for grass control, like Milestone and Avant-garde. The stuff entered the Compost through manure of horses, that ate grass treated with those aminopyralid products.

Green Mountain Compost quickly removed all products, bagged and others, after discovery of that pollution.
