Besides the ph or fertilizer blend you can argue about, what’s possibly most important to growing things well? Root depth. We tend to think of the ground as a horizontal plane…but realy it’s a vertical place with different layer. Unless we know which layer our plants want to root in, we’re watering emptiness, or overwatering them and killing their roots (which like most thing prefer to be kept relatively dry). Effective root depth isn’t the same than maximum rooting depth (the occasional deep explorer tip). Don’t design your beds based off finding those few roots. Avoid running water through areas where nothing much is doing its work. Understand what the active zone look like, which is where the biggest part of the work gets done.
Understanding Root Depth for Better Gardens
The data show that the biggest chunk of a typical vegetable bed is taken up by moderate feeders (whose roots penetrate anywhere from a dozen to two feet). Another quarter of it are shallow-rooted; another quarter is deep-rooted (with the very deep minority). That pattern translates into knowing just where you should of direct your soil-prep attention. Spending all your tilling energy in the top inch? You’re ignoring the home range of most of your crop. Spending yours all going deep for something like asparagus? It is a waste. We’d like to soak the soil to reach the area where roots are most active. This gets the water to the depth at which the plant is actualy feeding. A layer of mulch will help slow evaporation from the top layers, making it cooler up there but not forming a barrier. Don’t ignore hardpan either; dense layers of soil deflects roots and stunt their growth. Another trap is containers that are too small, because they limit the amount of water available and cause roots to circle instead. Regularly repeated light sprinkling encourage plants to develop shallow habits, the opposite of what you want if you hope to be strong during drought.
Root growth progression alters the watering routine. When the seedling starts out, an inch or two of watering suffices, but once into the vegetative stage, that target depth expand significantly. And then again at fruiting time, the goal is an even wider area. Instead of getting stuck at seed-zone depth, always stretch your soaking range to match growing root zones. The trick: Grow them down by growing them down. So do not let them rot off from overwatering; instead, invite them to explore deeply.
Some plants like lettuce (which are happy with regular light check-backs) and some like tomatoes (who want a good drench). The latter require more-soaking as they gets larger, whereas the former want a shallower dip most of the year. Others, such as sunflowers and asparagus, may go very deep, six feet or more. They may need another tactic altogether to open up that subsoil early on in their lives so they can realy take hold.
There’s an old joke that gardens aren’t won or lost; they’re grown. An extra point: Gardening isn’t so much about taming nature as figuring out how to go with the flow, aligning what you do with the natural world rather than trying to fight it. If you learn to look (rather than guess) at where the roots grow, you’ll reap bigger, healthier crops while wasting less and using less water.
