Almost always, though, it’s a spacing thing: Seeds are little dots that seem to use so little space, right? Wrong. Architects are at work here: Seeds wants to survive. The Importance of Plant Spacing

Closer together doesn’t mean more carrots. It means fewer carrots… But puny ones.

Why? Those giant leaves are solar panels. When they overlap with your neighbor’s plants, moisture will become trapped. Moisture traps lead to powdery mildew. That’s why people mess up on this one. They believe it’s all about competing roots. No… It’s all about airflow. The bigger the leaf, the more space you need to let air blow through and dry out any foliage that got wet from the last rain.

The bottom line: Decide your density class before you ever pull the packet open. Are these staked tomato plants needing some vertical breathing room? Or an intensively planted salad mix where every square inch matters? It’s all about the square-foot footprint. Pick that, and everything else falls into place.

It’s not just about putting seed in the ground; it’s about creating an ecosystem. Get the spacing right, and the plants will do the rest. Get it wrong and it’ll be a war on misshapen roots and mildew. So pull out your stakes, create your grid lines, measure twice, thin once, then give the plants the space they so desperatly need to do their best.
