You might go out to pull seeds from soil only to find they’ve turned shriveled and slimy because the ground wasn’t warm enough. Ouch. What’s a gardener with a plan of crop rotations, and expensive seeds, to do?
Most often it isn’t seed at fault; it’s the soil temperature. Because the air and the dirt don’t hold heat in the same way, we have a tendency to believe what our porch-mounted air thermometer says… But while outside may be summery and sunny, the ground might still feel cold. That’s when plans goes wrong in so many gardens.
Check the Soil Temperature, Not the Air
Based off their lowest temperatures, here’s how to sort vegetable into temperature classes, with a handy chart (above) to put this to use: No more guesswork.
Lettuce and spinach, cool-season crops… Are early risers. They’ll push right up through barely-thawed ground, tough enough to get at even when the soil is just about freezing. Why? Because cool is what they like, and they don’t just tolerate it. If you sow them too late, your likely to have bitter leaves. Or no germination at all. And then there is in-between area. That’s your sweet corn and tomatoes. Those guy are fickle. On one hand, they won’t rot quite as fast as beans do in cool soil. But on the other, yes, they won’t pop up predictably before the ground reach at least fifty degrees. It is a waiting game.
When the weather sounds good (as it often does to many of us) we get antsy and sow anyway, forgetting that the soil is still cold, not just the air. Then those seeds sits and wait for pathogens to move in. Warm-season crops requires warm soil, or at least enough heat to warm them up. Beans, squash, eggplants, and peppers wants about sixty degrees to wake up. Below that, forget it (they don’t merely nap); they go bad. As the graphic explains, it’s both a biological and a chemical thing. Bacteria and fungi loves moist cold soil, where they dine on softening seed coats. This means if you’re tempted to start your squash seed in April, you’re preparing a feast for mold.
Minimum temperature isn’t the only factor. There are also best temperatures. It is just like the ideal temperature at which you would rather sit inside then outside. And if you prefer sitting indoors on your comfy sofa, guess what temperature I am talking about. For example, cucumber seeds technicaly can germinate at forty degrees…but not fast or optimally. In fact, their ideal soil temperature is closer to ninety-five degrees. That’s a big difference. It means weeks of wait-time from the minimum to the optimum.
When the soil hits the best zone, germination will be both fast and uniform. Seedlings is vulnerable, so the faster they emerge, the fewer opportunities pests have to find them.
How can you tell? Stop guessing with a soil thermometer. This does not has to be some fancy piece of equipment. Just push down about an inch or two and you’ll get the real story. Check it in the morning. That’s when the temperature will give you the worst case scenario for your seeds. When the morning readout says it’s the minimum for the crop you’re sowing, you’re good to go. Otherwise you wait. And that’s the toughest part: patience.
You wanna get out there and plant and see those green shoots happening, but pushing a warm season crop into the cold ground spells failure. Soil can be tricked into warming more quickly. Putting black plastic mulch on the bed before planting is one trick that raises its temperature. So does clear plastic. But keep an eye on it. If it gets too hot, the seeds can cook; if it is too cold, they can rot. Each crop only tolerates so much heat, a maximum temperature beyond which germination stalls. Success is a slender line.
Gardening is biology, and successful biology is all about working with biology: You invite life to come live in the soil. What do living things asks of us? You must provide their conditions. Match your seed to the zone; check the soil temperature. Wait for the green’s timeline instead of your own. When it arrives, the rest will follow.
The seed you pulled out last year that was all slimy didn’t fail because it was a bad seed. It failed because the dirt wasn’t ready yet. Let the ground wake up itself; the rest will follow.
