Base lime on a soil test. Lawn color, moss, and weeds can hint at pH problems, but lime rates should come from tested pH and the turf target.
Split high surface rates. For established turf, several lighter passes are easier to spread evenly and reduce the chance of dusty clumps or hot spots.

It’s so light!’ So you spread one bag around out there on a big swath of lawn, thinking that you’re done, and what you did was put a skin-deep layer down onto the soil.”
Getting the pH right in the lawn involve understanding the chemistry and the texture, and it isn’t simply a matter of volume. The calculator takes your yard size and soil data into account, and tells you exactly how much you need.
Why One Bag of Lime Is Not Enough
The amount of lime needed also depend on the type of soil. Because sand contains low levels of acidity, it doesn’t require as much lime to alter the pH (and if you put down too much), it’ll wash out soon enough. Conversely, clay has a high cation exchange capacity, meaning that it tightly holds onto those ions. If you want your clay to have the same high pH as your sand, you need to add more. Enter this tiny bit of information into the tool and the base rate will be adjusted accordingly, based off your soil type. This in turn impacts the number of pounds the output will suggest (many).
The other factor is what’s in the product. For example, dolomitic lime contain magnesium, so that’s good if your soil needs some; however, the neutralizing value might be less then with calcitic lime. Pelletized lime, dust-free, spreads more evenly, but again, read the label and look at a percent of the active ingredient. That’s taken into account by the calculator when figuring weight. It says to purchase more bag of the weaker version to make up the difference.
The goal pH will depend on what kind of turf you have: For example, kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue likes about 6.5, and centipede grass like a slightly lower number (about 5.5). Too-high pH is bad for centipede; you don’t want to raise that one too high because it will be deficient in iron. The default setpoint is what the tool thinks it should of be, based on the type of grass you selected, but you may adjust up or down depending on advice from your local extension service. This is not about raising a number, it’s about tweaking things specifically for the biology of where you live; soil advice differ regionally.
Why apply half now and half later? Because it’s too much for the lawn to handle all at once. It’s difficult to spread that many pounds per thousand square feet evenly; doing so would be stressful for the grass. Set a max number in the calculator. It will divide up the total between as many applications as needed. This allows it to be applied evenly and provides time for the soil to respond.
Water after each application to dissolve the lime and get it down in the root zone rather than letting it sit on top. Make sure there’s balance: roots will breathe and fertilizer will work.
What’s the starting place? Your starting place is your soil test, as visual clues from the weed population are slow indicators. Next thing: Do the math. It’s simple arithmetic based off the number you get back from the lab. You should also use what you know about the product you purchase, your grass type, and your soil. Adjust the amount accordingly.
Then sit back, wait, water. It takes time and a little patience. Buying one bag is not enough; it’s just the first step, not the last.
