Do not allow the balanced grade to hide an imbalance. If a soil test already shows high phosphorus or potassium, size by nitrogen only when the added P₂O₅ and K₂O surplus is acceptable for that field.
Treat foliar rates as supplements. A 5 lb/ac foliar pass of 19-19-19 only contains 0.95 lb/ac gross N, P₂O₅, and K₂O, so it rarely replaces a soil fertility program.
Before you put down some fertilizer on your soil, you’d better get to know a little bit about how fertilizer work. Because fertilizer isn’t just dumping some stuff out there that’s good for plant, it’s also about getting it where it needs to go. Knowing how many pounds of each active ingredient are in a bag labeled 19-19-19, and how much actualy gets delivered to the leaves or roots, matters. Or if you simply broadcast onto the surface of dry soil and let the rains come, you may well lose some of the nitrogen to volatilization. And there are quirks to foliar spray as well.

Tell it how you’re going to be using it. Select foliar spray and the calculator ups the need for the product, knowing the plant can’t get it all at once. It also deals with the reality of tank mixes. It doesn’t provide a total poundage; it break it down by tank size. This is the practical part that keep you from running out of mix halfway through the field.
