This can seem like a bit of magic in greenhouse until you grasp how selection and pollination work. That is where having a structured reference comes into play.
Choosing your parents is where it all begins. You’re not selecting color when you select seeds. You’re selecting traits. Want a mild pepper with the heat of a jalapeño? It sounds like surgery, but really, it’s simply using a set of forceps and being careful. One missed anther, and you’ve got self-pollination, and no more hybrid.
Next, you bag the flower to exclude any wayward pollen. And then there’s the actual pollination, the gentle art of taking the pollen from the designated male parent and putting it on female’s stigma. It is a delicate dance. Be gentle, but be thorough.
