But the truth is, plants don’t follow our calendars. They follow the actual moisture content of the soil, which vary constantly as light, temperature, and humidity do. Why You Should Use a Soil Moisture Meter
So how it works: These devices (see chart above) don’t require some fancy digital system to begin with, just a simple digital readout or a basic analog needle that tells you whether soil is fully soaked or bone-dry. What’s critical is knowing where on the scale you are. Most meters use a straightforward one to ten scale, but each number mean something different depending on what you’re trying to grow.
