“Should I water the garden, or not?” That’s often my first thought when I walk outside, followed by a guess… And that means I either didn’t water (or) over-watered, to. Guesswork can be eliminated through a soil moisture sensor, which replaces it with data. It transforms an unclear sense of things into a precise instruction: The smart loop looks like this in a flow chart (above).
It use a basic probe to read the dirt conditions; then it prompts you to provide automatic care. If it drops down into the single digits, that’s an emergency to us and we open up all the way to prevent stress from root water. If it comes back up into the moderate range, then we’ll shorten the watering time. And if it gets into this zone, we turn off the system. This is typically about sixty percent saturation, which is the ideal zone for most soil types. We don’t water again till it’s dry. So that prevents overwatering, and overwatering will rot your roots just as much than underwatering.
Know what kind of sensor you’re getting, as it matters. Resistant (resistive) probes are inexpensive but eventually give in to corrosion if exposed to salts and water. Popular: capacitive sensors can withstands corrosion better and last longer in moist conditions. Tensiometers measure soil-water tension, how tough do the plants has to work to extract their meal from the ground? Gypsum blocks, like these, provide another good option for monitoring the area where most of the action occur, down below in the deep root zone. Remember, you’re not just purchasing a gizmo; you’re selecting a type of measurement appropriate to the character of your garden.
