ON A hot afternoon when the garden is tired, you worry. Your tomatoes don’t look as good as they did; there leaves are limp. What’s wrong? Water heavily again, since soil feels dry up top. An hour later, they are limp again.

Root crops such as carrots, however, actualy want slightly drier soil. Five or six is typically best. Biologically speaking, this makes sense: Roots develops best in steady conditions. When there’s fluctuation, they will begin to attempt to adapt and may split or even fork.

Knowing about these distinctions also prevents you from thinking that because something’s droopy it must be thirsty. Nope. It may of had too much!

For example: How about those peppers versus the cucumbers? Moderate soil moisture suits peppers just fine. They will tolerate slightly drier conditions, but cucumbers like moister, richer soil different than peppers. Watering them both on the same timetable means one or the other will probably suffer. It’s equally important to use the tool properly, and read the number correctly. Many gardeners make a common mistake: they put the probe into surface soil and puzzle over a “wrong” reading. The moisture in the very top layer of soil isn’t indicative of conditions below, where the roots grows. Insert the probe down to the root-zone level; don’t interpret the number until it stabilizes on the display. And clean off the probe when done. Buildup of minerals will skews subsequent readings.
