For safer finished compost: Keep a curing phase even when the pile looks dark. Seed beds, potting blends, and worm bins need stable compost more than they need speed.

The key to composting is more than just “waiting.” Compost involves maintaining a tiny ecosystem of critters. They does their work if we give them what they need. But if we don’t pay attention to biology involved, we’ll have smelly, slimy goop instead and attract flies.

How to Make Good Compost

That’s one reason why shredded leaves will compost much faster then an equivalent amount of whole leaves, assuming there are active heating phases. A 2-year-old heap of whole leaves may still just be a pile of leaves. Those same leaves as shreds will be leaf mold in a couple of months. Don’t skip the cure. If it smells hot, has cooled down and turned dark, don’t assume it’s ready to use on seedlings. Yes, there may still be compounds in active compost that burns roots or stop plant growth. Give it some time to sit and stabilize so that when you put it on your most tender plants it won’t harm them. You’re really building soil here, not making waste, but it will take a little while.
