Cucumbers truly love the Sun. The direct sunshine helps their flower and fruit growth, what needs the light for those plants. They require daily sunshine for good benefit and repay the growers with rich crop.
Cucumber plants should receive between six and eight hours of direct sunshine each day for the best result. Although ten or more hours of such light are even more helpful, if the place allows that. Full Sun helps Cucumber grow with at least six hours of daily sunshine, and more always benefits.
How Much Sun Do Cucumbers Need
Rainy or cloudy days however will happen, and it is not possible to stop them.
Big fruiting plants, like Cucumbers, usually need at least six hours of full Sun. The minimum for Cucumber plants is at least seven hours of strong sunshine. Some Cucumbers can manage with around four hours of Sun, but that is not the best.
Places that give at least eight hours of direct sunshine daily are ideal for their crop.
Cucumbers belong to warm season crops. They grow best in 80°F to 85°F and grow well in heat between 70-90°F with lots of sunshine. They are sensitive to cold under 31°F, when one grows them outside.
Cucumber plants need heat and light, so the good place for a jar or tin is on a sunny area.
But here comes the difficult part. Although Cucumbers like heat and humidity, they do not always enjoy strong sunshine. They can wilt in direct Sun during the warmest moments of the day.
The leaves can loose colour and seem burned after some very warm days. Movement of potted Cucumbers into shade during warm hours helps a lot. Even so they will still give fruits, if there is enough sunshine, moisture and food in the ground.
Plant your Cucumber plant beside the east side of shady garden plants works well. It receives direct Sun during the cool morning hours and gentle light in the afternoon. Lay the plant beside the east side of an awning with 30-percent shady fabric provides morning Sun and filtered shade for the rest of the day.
Such shady cover can serve from late morning until mid-afternoon to protect the Cucumbers during the peak heat.
If the garden or terrace is partly shaded, Cucumbers still need at least six hours of sunshine. In areas with short days or cold temperatures, fake light can help the plants. In theory Cucumbers could grow more under exact fake light plans, but natural light is more real.
One can combine both in a greenhouse for big results. When a Cucumber plant is no longer young, it lasts more Sun in the south covered part of the greenhouse.
Sandy soil in places with good Sun exposure and quick drainage works best for big harvests. Raised beds keep more heat from directsunshine, what helps the growth. Cucumbers also need regular water during growth, otherwise the fruits can twist.
