Especially at early stages, seedlings require extra care and attention in order to grow into a healthy plant. But what happens when you are planning a vacation after a long time? How will the seedlings survive all by themselves? This is a common question that we see many gardeners ask themselves whenever they are planning to go away from their garden.
In case you have also been wondering about how to keep seedlings moist while on vacation, then here are some of the things that you will need to know!
How To Keep Seedlings Moist While On Vacation?
1. Asking a Fellow Gardener
Whenever you are planning to go out for a long time, one of the best things you can do is to ask someone who you trust to take care of your plants for you. You can either ask a fellow neighbor, friend, or even a family member if someone lives close by to come and water the seedlings every now and then.
Do make sure that you leave detailed instruction notes for each individual plant about how much water it needs so that nobody messes up while watering the plants.
2. Using An Automatic Watering System
These days, you can easily get your hands on automatic watering systems which should help you be able to water your plants without any effort. How these systems work is that water is slowly dripped inside the soil at very slow pacing, making sure that the plant does not get dry.
You can also try purchasing a water globe or using a drip watering system with a timer. Either way, any of these should work just fine considering you do know how to use them just according to your seedling’s requirements as you don’t want to overfill them with water.
3. Using a Bath Towel
Alternatively, you can also soak a bath towel and use it in order to line a plastic bag’s bottom. Afterward, set your seedlings on top of that towel and start blowing air inside the bag. This should inflate the bag. You can then seal the bag using a rubber band.
Now, whenever the seedlings will release from the leaves, the water should be able to reach the top side of the bag and then drip back into the bottom of the soil. This is useful in particular if you notice having a hard time using an automatic watering system.
The Bottom Line:
There’s no wonder that you might end up hesitating on your vacation plans because of the fear of your seedlings dying out on you. Luckily, there are a number of things that you can do to ensure that your seedlings stay moist throughout.
