💡 Tip: Always Add a Buffer
Order at least 10% more sand than your calculation shows. Sand compacts after installation — you may need to top up, and short orders mean extra delivery trips.
💡 Tip: Pool Base vs. Filter Sand
Pool base typically uses mason sand (2–4 in layer). Pool filters use #20 silica filter sand — the amount depends on filter tank size, not pool area. Check your filter manual.

pool sand plays a big part in keeping pools pure and well set up. Filter sand, that one also calls silica sand, is especially made to catch even the most tiny particles. Here is the kind of sand that filters need for well cleaning pools.

One usually sells it in bags of 50 pounds, and it is found at any store of pool stuff.

Pool Sand: How to Use and Replace It

Makers of pools commonly advise to lay a base from 2-inch pool sand in the pool, under the liner. Such bases from pool sand must have at least 2 inches of depth. The pool sand should not have any rocks, stones, chips, twigs, trash or grass.

It must be pure, good mason sand. Usually one measures sand by cubic yards or tons, and to count the needed amount you must know the size of the pool, that includes the height and the radius.

Foam padding for a pool is another option, that protects the inner base of the pool wall against barks and sticks. It has around 3 and 3/4 inches of height and must sit above 3 inches of pool sand. Like this one gets a full height of around 7 inches, which is the advised measure for holding the liner and lowering the tension at the corner joints.

For filters with pool sand, the tank should fill only until around half to three parts of the height. That helps to create a good upper layer from pool sand to catch dirt from the pool. Too much pool sand will clog the filter more soon.

Too little will let dirt pass through it. A normal sized filter for an in-ground pool probably needs around 350 pounds of pool sand.

pool sand in the filter usually needs to be replaced every 3 to 5 years. Some companies for pool service suggest to exchange it every 10 to 15 years. The only way to truly know, when the pool sand works bad, is when one must always backwash or the pool simply does not clean despite everything else done well.

Every time one backwashes the filter a bit of pool sand goes down through the drain. Then there is not enough pool sand to hold the pressure of the water, and the remaining particles can blow into the pool.

Loose pool sand in the pool can point to several problems. The tank of the filter maybe is too filled with pool sand. One maybe used the wrong grade of pool sand.

Or the bottom drain could be cracked or broken. Before calling a specialist, touch the area with pool sand. If it forms a cloud, that is actually algae, that simply needs to be vacuumed up.

Glass sand is available as a replacement for the usual filter sand. Zeo sand is another option, that one finds at local stores of pool items. During a change of pool sand, a shop vacuum, painter tape and a roll of barrier is all that is needed.

It is good to check and swap the side parts during the change of pool sand, because removing all that pool sand only to fix a leaklater is really stressful.
