Farmers commonly ignored the topic of Fertilizer cost per pound thinking that it simply will grow a bit stronger. In 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine, the input costs jumped up through the ceiling and did not fall truly later. Already before that mainstream geopolitical chaos, one could see the signs on the wall.
Later conflict developed in Iran, what again cast prices of fertilizer in new ways. For instance, one farmer in Tennessee faced 100,000 dollars of extra expense for fertilizer during one alone season, that is 40-percent growth compared to the prior year.
Rising Fertilizer Costs Hurt Farmers
When one asks farmers, what them torture overnight, the prices of fertilizer stand at the peak of the list. Widely, that involves around 15 percent of their whole financial expenses through United States, but if one sets the attention on certain crops, the situation seems even more troubling. For corn tenants, fertilizer uses almost 36 percent of the operational budget.
At wheat it reaches around 35 percent, while sorghum come to 30 percent. Practically, that means, that third or more of teh expenses for sowing goes to this part.
The factors, that moves prices of fertilizer, act on global level, away from the control of any one land. The invasion of Russia in Ukraine, the Chinese restrictions about export of fertilizer, changes in energy prices, everything this creates havoc in the market. The Hormuz Strait, that key spot for energy and transfer, underwent delays, that strengthened costs of fertilizer and fuels.
On the other hand, when farmers must sell his products for prices under the production-costs, that creates severe pressure.
Nitrogen-based fertilizers are most important for corn, the biggest crop of United States according to area. Here the key spot: the production of nitrogen depends on natural gas as hydrogen base, so each event in energy markets immediately affects the prices of nitrogen. Also governmental rules matter, because making of fertilizer is dangerous and has actual impacts to the surroundings.
Farmers already during years complain about the high prices of fertilizer, but the recent explosion raised the problem to entirely new height.
Swings in prices do not hit everything equally however. While one period, seven from eight mainstream fertilizers became more expensive month after month, with urea jumping more than in 5 percent. Later, in other phase, six from those eight sank.
Phosphates continuously grow, although they did knot reach the gross levels of 2022. Lower taxes can help, one farmer observed triple drop of phosphate-price of 35 dollars for ton after changes in taxes started.
Care of domestic lawns has his own price. Professional fertilizer for average meadows cost around 400 dollars, covering maybe 10,900 square feet. Homeowners normally pay between 77 and 395 dollars for one application, depending on the needs.
For square foot, that results in two until eight cents for basic fertilizer, or until 40 cents if one adds extra elements to the mix. Naturally, bigger properties cost more, because they require more material and work. Who farms come with the best profitable results?
They are wiser about the usage of money for fertilizer. The upper 20 percent of profitable enterprises average spent 138 dollars for acre about fertilizer, during the bottom group lost 177 dollars, 28-percent gap, whatsays a lot.
Incomes of farms slip down, what causes that, that folks call generational emergency, caused by low prices of crops and unchanged inflation. Global politics continuously controls the discussions about supply of fertilizer and about that, what can be produced.
